Dick McClary
Dick McClary claims that his sailing exploits sprang directly from his passion for saltwater fishing. A civil engineer by professsion, his original experiences were in small power craft. Then in 1975, his brother-in-law introduced him to sailing on board a19ft Prelude. The fisherman himself became well and truly hooked.
Spurred by this experience, Dick bought himself an Etap 22 trailer-sailer. In these he cruised southern UK waters with his wife and young family. In 1982 he shifted up a gear and purchased a Nicholson 32. Perhaps predictably, with the larger boat came wider horizons – France, Portugal, Spain and the Mediterranean. Much of his early sailing was singlehanded. But not for long.
1987 saw a breakdown of his marriage and two years elapsed before he met Mary Swift, his partner and crew to this day. She had never sailed before, but a winter passage between Majorca and Gibraltar helped cement the conviction in both of them that they were well suited. In 1999, they launched Alacazam, a 38ft Andrew Simpson designed, high-performance cutter. In 2002 they completed an 18 day transatlantic crossing and have been cruising the Windward and Leeward Islands ever since.
Dick McClary is a member of the Yachting Journalist's Association and has been a contributor to a number of boating magazines. He is the author of one of RYA Publication's recent best sellers. Namely:
